ISLE OF MAN.PART 2.PEEL.TWO TRACKS:THE (IM)PERMANENT WAY.BY STEVEN BENSON

1.THE VANISHED RAILWAY

Time collapses into itself as I sat, on a sunny day, in the refurbished railway station, now a modern café,crammed with memento mori-of the defunct railway, closed in 1968,(and dismantled in 1975, about 3 years after I visited Ramsey aged 12) from Ramsey to St. johns(“connexions to Peel”!). The old station bears the weight of history.IMG_4315former ticket office/waiting room

In the shop, a book with old, sepia, grainy pictures of Ramsey in eld; showing, in the far distance, literally and metaphorically, the hotel in which I had stayed, as a child, so very long ago…now demolished. It was too painful-too redolent of vanished time-to photograph the picture. A memory within a station of memories. The image was a Barthian punctum.

Its always returning to us….the past

————————————————————————————

And all the birds of Man(n) sang; or was it the high-pitched whistle of the spectre of a train travelling, erstwhile, between Ramsey and St. Johns; or between my past and present?
