THE HEGEMONIC, SOMETIMES HETEROSEXIST, ACADEMIC SEBALD ESTABLISHMENT IS CHALLENGED!BY STEVEN BENSON

Helen Finch’s “Sebald’s Bachelors: Queer Resistance and the Unconforming Life”(Legenda, 2013)is out and available!

I have only read a few pages hitherto but its thesis looks promising and I very much want to be convinced by it; full review to follow, after the “Place in the Country” project(ongoing!)http://towardsutopia.wordpress.com/2011/09/14/wg-sebaldcritics-responsenon-response-to-the-large-amount-of-homosocialityclose-male-friendshipsand-of-homosexualbisexual-characters-in-his-work-with-particular-reference-to-the-character-of-h/

I am quoting my own posts, simultaneously with welcoming Helen Finch’s book, not to be competitive or claim (some) of the ground for myself, but in the spirit of co-operation, so that we can all share and learn from each other about this massive and criminally maginalised (except for a few writers like Finch, Santner and myself, and the odd, cursoory footnote) area of Sebald study and appreciation; and correct the imbalance.

  1. Thank you so much for buying the book, Steve! I can’t wait to read what you think of it, and would love to hear whatever criticisms you have to make. It’s a privilege to have such an engaged reader of my work as well as of Sebald’s.

    1. Helen, that is so sweet; i feel not so alone now in my lgbt/queer readings of so much of Sebald’s and am so greatful you have had the rigour and determination to write and publish your much-needed book, which redresses/addresses so much neglected in Sebald scholarship; I think Max would have been so glad this topic had been addressed, at last, mainly by you , with thanks to a few others; but not so comprehensively as yourself. I don’t suppose I shall be making any at all major criticisms, tho I will note any divergences of thinking!I think it is lovely and very needful that we break this contrived divide betwixt the academic world and broader interest-in all writers!-which is why I am trying to devise a belles-lettres/essayistic style when I write. I am preceding with my exegesis, in such a fashion, of “Place in the Country” and would be glad of any comments you make on that! x Steve
