TO MAX: W G SEBALD. POEM BY STEVEN BENSON

Why is it

That

When

Ever

I read

Just a
Few  pages;

Or hear your

Dis-embodied

Voice,

Max-

Across the

Years-

On your

Last radio

Interview:-

I am

Filled with

Tears,

As you

Describe the

Ellision in

Your mind

Of Hebel and

Your grand-

Father, from whose

Death

You

Never re-

Covered.

?

—————————————————————

It is

Because

You

Invoke/

Evoke

Untold

Griefs,

Losses,

Beauty;

In-ex

Plicable

Co-incidence,

ACROSS

Time

As mine

And many others’

Experiences

(This is

Often told)

Re-sound,

Re-echo with

Yours;

And

Express

All the

Sadness

(and yet,

Sometimes,

The bizarre

Humour)

Of the

World;

Life and

Death; and,

Perhaps,

Something

Even beyond

Death.

—————————————————————————

I am

Crying for

Myself
