TWO SEBALDIAN POEMS:1. DARK SATANIC MILLS

It seems as if

My past

Is becoming

More vivid,

As I recall,

Wandering,

In pre-cognition

Of Sebald

(Because I had not read any then),

Rootlessly,

In 1989,

Not in

Sebald’s 1966,

Circuitously

Around a

Pre-renovated

Dark

Dour

Manchester;

Ill but

Undiagnosed….

HE walked along

The canal

Past dark

Abandoned factories:

I walked

Through the

City centre

Past a

Kitsch

Shopping Centre ,

Whose gaudiness

Could have

Come from the

GDR!

And around

The poor areas of

Ancoats.

With their

Endless shops of

Indian saris

And silk

Manufacturers

………………………

Eerie repetition:

The revenant

Of the past

Echoing vaultlessly

Through Time

(second poem “West Pier” to follow soon)
