SEBALDIAN POEM 2:THE WEST PIER

The last vestige

An emblem of

Decay and

Catastrophe

NOW

……………………

THEN

A glorious Ballroom

Resplendent with

People dancing to

Schmaltzy

Melodies

……………………………………………………..

NEXT

A Desultory

Bingo Hall

……………………………………………

AND THEN

In 1975,

CLOSURE

Until it became

Cut off

From the other parts

Of itself,

Disembodied,

Wrenched apart,

Split in two.

EVENTUALLY,

It was

Set alight

And gradually

Fell into

The sea

…………………………………………………….

One night

We went there,

To the sea’s

Edge;

We were

Unsure if

We could see

A shadowy outline

Of the skeletal

Remains

Of what

Once was the

West Pier

……………………………………

The only

Monument

To it

We COULD see

Was the

Old-fashioned

Sweet

And Rock

Shop,

And I think

Even that

Has now

Gone
