SWANN IN LOVE

And so,the progress of Swann’s love for Odette(coutesan, prostitute and bisexual, though idealised in some sublimated fantasy by Swann), tortuous, and developing into rabid, but understandable multiple jealousies, and subjealousies, just as a snake, sinuous and everwrithing, just like Proust’s sentences themselves:-this progress from the representational pedestalized idealisation(via the beautiful paintings she is compared to, as Proust’s OWN love, for men, was transformed into spying on others’ lovemaking and into opposite sex attractions and lesbian attraction and self-loathing inverts), immediately into the agonies of jealousy, offset by self-deceptive re-transformings back of the love into a simalcrum of what it once was; and its ultimate, sudden and unconvincing transformation into “friendship”: this agonised, contrapuntally layered love, assayed in polyphonically structured sentences

returns back upon itself, recoils and then edges forward, to reflect, as successfully as possible, in the medium of the one simultaneous layer that prose can ONLY be, all the doublings and dissatisfactions of the narrator and Proust’s OWN tortured life.
