THE LIFT AND THE OTHER LOST (FOURTH) FLOOR

Lewis’s boasted what was probably the last attendant-operated lift; the last of at least six in the shop(see image further down this page). The attendant sat on a fold-down stool and operated the lift by means of some kind of crank. Very antiquated and bewitching.

I asked him would he stop at the similarly reputedly desolate FOURTH floor. He obliged- and we were greeted with: – a blank and monolithic and forbidding concrete wall; a later tenant of this floor(after Lewis’s had abandoned it), he said, had blocked the floor off from the public lift. It was disconcerting and eerie
